Despite rapid growth in The Shops at White Oak Village, neighboring shopping center Best Buy Station is losing it’s signature tenant. Although a Sweet Frog location opened earlier this year in the complex and has seen a steady stream of customers, the electronics retailer did not fare as well, and is one of 50 Best Buy stores scheduled to close this year. Best Buy is one of the stores credited with the demise of Richmond-based Circuit City stores. With a weakened economy, sales of electronics like large screen televisions along with CD and DVD sales have slackened along with the growth of iPods, tablets and internet streaming which have removed the need for physical discs. The store is located at 4410 South Laburnum Avenue is across from The Shops at White Oak Village which has had steady growth including the opening of a Salon Plaza, Steak ‘n Shake restaurant and also has a Michaels craft store slated to open in May. The store is closed today, but will reopen Sunday for final sales. The store is expected to close permanently on Saturday, May 12th. Once this store closes, there will only be seven Best Buy locations in Richmond. What are your thoughts on the store closing?
